How many times do you hear "How do you spell ____?" at the beginning of the year. To encourage my students to phonetically spell, we do weekly spelling practice in our reading and writing notebooks. I give them two words a week to stretch out and spell on their own. One word is always a cvc word. We talk about how 5 and 6 year olds spell words differently because they hear different sounds. When they ask me "Is this how you spell ____?" I tell them "That is exactly how a 5 year old would spell that word." After we do this for a few weeks I no longer hear "How do you spell ___?" throughout my room during writing workshop. I also use these weekly spelling practice pages as assessments for things to work on during reading or writing workshop.
great suggestions thanks

I love the idea of two words to stretch and spell. When do you start doing that?
ReplyDeleteI started the spelling practice about a month or so into the year. I do a drawing unit as my first writing unit of the year, so I start the spelling practice at the same time we start labeling pictures during writing workshop.
DeleteThank you for this series of posts and the student examples.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE my weekly spelling!! I am going to do that in the fall. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJust like I will be doing a million of your ideas in the fall:)
DeleteI love this idea. Last year I used just science notebooks and had their writing in a writing folder. I like this so much better as it is all in one place and will be easier for the students to see how much they grow and change. Thank you
