character traits in kindergarten

I use Kid Adsit and Michele Scannell's reader's workshop units. Their Digging Deeper unit focuses on characters and settings. I was frustrated with my students'  simple responses to describe characters. Everyone knows that Goldilocks is a girl with blonde hair. I wanted them to be able to do a little more thinking about characters, so I created this character traits unit for kindergarten learners. I picked words to describe characters that five and six year olds could relate to. Here is how this unit works...

Read a story...
sort the character trait cards to describe the main character...
{I made my students provide evidence from the story to support the character trait they picked.}
 add the character traits they pick to describe the character to a graphic organizer...
 have readers draw and pick their own character traits to describe the character...
read another story and repeat the above activities.
My students loved this activity.
You can download, print and do this activity right away.

workshop signs

While you are busy setting up your classroom, don't forget about keeping your students focused. Here is a simple way that I remind my students about what we are working on every day. I used my Silhouette Cameo to make this focus board on the end of my desk, but workshop signs are included in the packet. You can use them on a bulletin board, Smartboard or magnetic board. Make sure that all of your students know what you are working on daily in reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

friday freebie - authors

This Facebook Freebie goes along with last week's freebie. Last week's freebie was character pictures. This week's freebie is author pictures. I use these the same way that I use the character pictures. As we read several books written by an author, I hang up their picture. We use these pictures to make connections to stories throughout the year and to compare author's writing craft. Check out some reader's theaters based on some of these author's stories in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store
See you next Friday!

sight word reader's theater

My newest Reader's Theater unit focuses on practicing and reading sight words. These are perfect for kindergarten guided reading groups. This unit focuses on practicing sight words, using pictures to read tricky words and independent reading. My little readers are loving these and begging to do them daily.
