my gradebook
I made my own gradebook this year. I made a classlist grid for each subject and placed them in section for each of the 4 quarters of the school year. In the back I made a section for taking notes or recording responses. I designed and laminated the front and back cover, copied my class information on the inside of the cover and took it all to Kinko's to be spiral bound for the price of $3.00. I have wanted to do this for years...so excited that I finally took the time to get it done! I will use this and a "growing learners" notebook for writing workshop and work station conferences to keep me super organized this year. To keep track of papers and work samples I use a folder for each student that I can easily take to meetings or organize for conferences.

Meet the Teacher Monday
Something about me...
I am a mother of 3 boys {4 if you count my husband} and a kindergarten teacher. I refer to my home as a frat house...this week the frat boys sprayed cinnamon all over the bathroom during their "who can swallow a spoonful of cinnamon" competition. I was very happy to find out that it was cinnamon since it was all over the bathroom...you can imagine what I thought it was at first glance.

How long have I been teaching?
This is my 22nd year of teaching. I started my career teaching 2nd grade and then I moved to half day kindergarten. This is my second year teaching all day kindergarten. I absolutely love kindergarten! Their curiosity, innocence and enthusiasm make my job so much fun.
Something you might not know about me...
There are a lot of teachers in my family. My grandmother attended Marshall University for 2 years, got a teaching degree and taught in a one room schoolhouse in West Virginia. My grandfather was a farmer in the summer and a basketball coach and teacher in West Virginia during the school year. Later in his career he taught chemistry at the high school I attended. My mom is a retired teacher who would read Where the Red Fern Grows to her 5th graders every year. Some of my fondest memories are of my mom telling us about funny things that happened at school during dinner...stories about Stevie, snoring feet and the city bus. I was raised by my mother and grandmother, 2 amazing women, because my father passed away when I was in 3rd grade. I named my oldest son after my dad and it is amazing how much he looks like him...
What am I looking forward to this year?
I love the start of a new school year. I have had the summer to work on projects and do some professional reading {I know this will be a surprise to many who think that teachers do nothing during the summer}, my classroom is sparkly and super organized and my bulletin boards are ready for some 5 and 6 year old creations. I am also looking forward to using so many of your blog ideas that I have found and are "pinned" to my boards.
What do I need to improve on this year?
If you follow my blog you know that I need to work on slowing down and not working so late at night so that I catch my typos before my blogging buddies do:) I also want to build on the science and math notebooks that I started last year as well as have my students start reading and writing notebooks.
Teaching supplies that I can NOT live without...
Starbucks in the morning & Diet Coke at noon, Mr. Sketch markers, my Mac, my Google Reader, fonts, Dansko clogs, professional books {I go back to these year after year...some authors I feel like are my BFFs} post-it notes, Lakeshore and books...lots and lots of books.

Hello Room 131!!!!
This summer I went to New York with my family. We visited West Point with my father-in-law who was an All-American and the first 1,000 yard rusher in West Point football history, spent some time on Lake Oscawana and a day in New York City. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and hearing about what you did this summer. If you would like to tell me about your summer now, you can leave me a comment. I met PW this weekend!!!
Help me Rhonda! This weekend I got to meet Ree Drummond!! Ree's blog, The Pioneer Woman, is one of my favorites. Every recipe that I have made of Ree's has been amazing!! Her cookbook is a must have and her new book is a great read about her life. She spoke just a few feet away from us and as you can see, Lily read her cookbook while we waited for our line letter to be called. When we met Ree she went crazy over Stacy's baby belly and I could barely speak.

I married my husband 16 years ago, even though our union resulted in my first and last name rhyming for the rest of my life.
We have 3 sons, Jack (15), Brian (11) and Casey (7). I refer to our home as the frat house...even our 95 pound airedale terrier is a boy. I could start another blog about all the gross stuff and strange sounds that go on in our home, but all that needs to be kept under wraps.
I went to Ohio University and pray that one of my boys will become a Bobcat so that I can hang out at the Junction again and jam with the band at football games.

I am currently teaching all day kindergarten.

I have been teaching for 21 years...20 in the same school district. The same school district where I live, which means that my boys can't get away with anything without me finding out seconds after it happens. I love my job and I teach with some of the most amazing women.

Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t a teacher?
A: Inspired by the movie..."The Wedding Planner."
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: technology, photography, stamping/card making (or collector of supplies to make cards), reading, blogging, blog stalking and #1 sports fan for my boys
Q: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I wanted to be a teacher. I made all the neighborhood kids play school with me. My mom, grandfather and grandmother were teachers...my grandmother taught in a one room schoolhouse in West Virginia.
Q: What are your guilty pleasures?
A: Diet Coke, pretzel M&Ms, Danskos, The Real Housewives, red wine and blogging
Q: What is your biggest fear?!
A: I am terrified that something will happen to me and I won't be able to be there for my boys. My father died when I was very young and I still miss him and think of him often.

Q: When you’re on vacation, where do you like to go?
A: Anywhere with my boys...for the past several years we have made some great memories in
Sunset Beach, North Carolina.
Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
A: My mentor when I started teaching who is now like a sister to me has given me so much great advice, but I often think about these two:
1. Always do what is best for the kids (your students).
2. When I had small children of my own she told me to remember that what is cute at 2 is obnoxious at 5:)

Q: What do you value most in others?
A: Being genuine and honest.
Q: If you could choose one of your personality traits to pass down to your kids, what would it be?
A: My sense of humor and ability to stay calm while my husband freaks out.
Q: If you could have lunch with anyone in the world….living or dead…who would it be?
A: I would love to have lunch with my dad.

I was the field commander for the marching band and a cheerleader in high school. The same small farm town high school that Alex Karev/Justin Chambers and his twin attended...he was a freshman when I was a senior.
