Reading & Writing Notebooks Week - Wednesday

I {heart} using notebooks in my classroom!
How many times do you hear "How do you spell ____?" at the beginning of the year. To encourage my students to phonetically spell, we do weekly spelling practice in our reading and writing notebooks. I give them two words a week to stretch out and spell on their own. One word is always a cvc word. We talk about how 5 and 6 year olds spell words differently because they hear different sounds. When they ask me "Is this how you spell ____?" I tell them "That is exactly how a 5 year old would spell that word." After we do this for a few weeks I no longer hear "How do you spell ___?" throughout my room during writing workshop. I also use these weekly spelling practice pages as assessments for things to work on during reading or writing workshop.

Later in the year we do other activities like write it and draw it.

Reading & Writing Notebooks Week - Tuesday

I {heart} using notebooks in my classroom!

Here is another sight word activity.
We make predictable charts using our sight words.
I type the sentences and cut them apart.
My students have to put their sentence back together,
tape it into their journal and draw a picture.
Here are the resources...
Here are a couple of pages...

I {heart} using notebooks in my classroom!

I introduce two sight words a week.
We highlight our weekly words and illustrate a poem in
our reading and writing notebooks.
I found the poems that I use in these awesome resources...
I typed the poems on labels.

Science Notebook Week - Saturday

I {heart} using notebooks in my classroom!
This week I am sharing some of our science notebook pages.
We went on a field trip to a pond.
We read these books...
We created these notebook pages...
We made a list of plants and animals that we saw at the pond.
We learned about fish and other pond life during our study.
