Reading & Writing Notebooks Week - Thursday

I {heart} using notebooks in my classroom!

We respond to literature in our reading and writing notebooks.
We read lots of books about the same character, by the same author, or with the same title and then write or draw about them in our notebooks. I use labels to add the guided questions to the top of the notebook pages.

  2. I love this idea. I despise journals in my classroom but I know it is because I am terrible at using them correctly. I love the idea of labels. I think I'm gonna have to steal it! Do you ask for composition notebooks in your school supply list or does your school provided them?

    1. I order the notebooks as part of our fees because I LOVE the unruled books. Once you get started you will find yourself looking at a worksheet and thinking "How can I turn this into a notebook page?" Please come back and share any ideas that you come up with.

  3. I have loved your posts about how you use notebooks in your classroom! They have been informative and inspirational. I just wish you were a 1st grade teacher so I could borrow all your examples! Lol. I've been making notes in my own notebook to refer back to. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I love this Journal idea and would like to incorporate it in my Kindergarten class this year. Could you please tell me how and when you start this? My kids are not writing at the beginning and I'm sure you could use it at the beginning regardless but I would love to know how you do it. Thank you!

    1. Lucia, I start my my year doing a drawing unit in writing workshop, so quickly they are confident enough to draw in their notebooks. We use our science notebook first and draw ourselves as scientist after we have look at and talked about a lot of different scientist. I feel that with visual supports and modeling your kids will really surprise you. During the beginning of the year I provide a lot of support. Some entries we even do together. As the year goes on they need less support and can do entries on their own. Good luck!!
